State kabaddi teams prepare in earnest

KUCHING: The Sarawak Kabaddi Association (SKA) have set two clear directions for the state men’s and women’s shadow teams.

Firstly, coach Ganisan Punisamy wants early preparation for next year’s Sukma in Kuala Lumpur.

“This year I reckon that we must prepare earlier than we did last year. I believe that if we prepare now we might just do better than we did in 2013,” he said.

Sarawak only sent the men’s team to the 2013 Sukma. The team did well enough to qualify for the last eight.

It was an improvement from their inaugural outing in 2011 when the team failed to go beyond the group stage.

Secondly, Ganisan also believes that both the men’s and women’as teams should have more exposure trips and play in more competitions.

“In my opinion, the more tournaments we participate in, the better. We have participated in quite a few tournaments this year and we hope to go for more before the coming Sukma,” he said.

The teams are currently taking a break due to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

They will also travel to Kuala Lumpur next month to participate in the Merdeka Cup Kabaddi Tournament from Aug 29 – 31.

“For the tournament in Kuala Lumpur next month, we are hopeful that we could walk away with something. I hope that both our men’s and women’s shadow team will give it their best shot,” Ganisan added.

The teams are also expected to enter for another tournament in Melaka in September.
