Assistant MO fined RM2,000 for possession of heroin

KUALA LUMPUR: An assistant medical officer was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to possessing two straw tubes containing heroin two months ago.

Zaimi Mat, 35, committed the offence behind a hotel in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here at 3.30am on May 24.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides a maximum jail term of five years or fine up to RM100,000, or both, if convicted.

Magistrate Zuraini Abdul Razak also ordered Zaimi to serve three months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Zaimi paid the fine.

Meanwhile, in another court, a despatch rider was fined RM1,200 in default three months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to possessing and carrying a machete without permission.

V Yuvandran, 34, was charged with possessing and carrying a 33cm-long machete without permission, which he hid in his raincoat when arrested at Jalan 11/32 Jalan Jinjang Baru, Sentul here at 11.15 pm on July 13.

The charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries a maximum imprisonment of two years or whipping or fine, upon conviction.
