SEREMBAN: ‘Op Bantu’ by the Civil Defence Department Malaysia (JPAM) will be carried out in two phases, July 24-27 and July 30-Aug 3 in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season.

Its director-general, Datuk Zaitun AB Samad said during the operation, JPAM members would give assistance to road users in emergency situations or involved in road accidents at certain focal locations along the federal roads.

“We will also provide refreshments for those caught in massive traffic jams to break their fast during the Raya exodus to their hometowns. About 7,200 JPAM members natiowide will be involved in ‘Op Bantu’.”

She said this to reporters after a gathering and ‘moreh’ with Negeri Sembilan JPAM members, here, Wednesday night.

Zaitun who was appointed to her current post on May 2, hoped the public would understand better JPAM’s responsibilities and functions in serving the community in various situations.

She said JPAM members were used to being involved in rescue missions following natural disasters and in assisting accident victims.

“Considering their nature of work, I hope the welfare of JPAM members be taken into consideration by offering them a group insurance scheme, a benefit enjoyed by members of Rela (People’s Volunteer Corps).

“Insurance coverage is important for JPAM members as they are exposed to danger during search-and-rescue operations,” she added.

Zaitun also hoped that more JPAM members would be given promotion in line with their duties and
functions.

“These matters are being studied while improvements will be made in certain areas,” she said. — Bernama
