A press statement said the association led by president Dr Ong Puay Hoon recently paid a courtesy call on patron Datin Azerina Mohd Arip to inform her of the event.

One of the highlights would be the ‘A Cake for a Cause’ Cake Festival, where the association is appealing to the public to donate a cake to help build its centre.

“We plan to promote DASwk’s ‘A Cake for a Cause’ and enlist the support from the public especially famous personalities and organisations where the fairy tale concept is to build an institute ‘made by cakes’,” said association publicity head Feizal K Avarathar.

For a start the association aims to collect 100 cakes from the public and organisations for sale and auction.

“As an incentive for the public, these cakes will be sold below the normal market price,” he said.

There will also be barbecue specialities by a chef, song requests – ‘A Ringgit a Song’, plant and herb sale, sale of decorative art by students, auctioning of discounted sewing machine, car wash by club and students, colouring competition, ABC and ice cream auction, games, book and literature sale.

Voted as the most active non-governmental organisation (NGO) by the Ministry of Women, Welfare and Family Development last year, DASwk aims to build a new learning and resource centre in Desa Wira, Batu Kawa with hostel facilities for children from outside Kuching and a vocational block for young adults with learning disabilities.

The state government has allocated one and a half acres of land and an estimated RM3 million is needed to construct the institute.

“In line with the development of the state and improving education standards of Sarawak, DASwk, aims to raise RM60,000 during the fair. With this in mind, we appeal to the public to support us in this endeavour,” said Feizal.

The charity fair is looking for contributors and volunteers.
