LAHAD DATU: Residents in this district have been advised not to panic or misunderstand the imposition of curfew.

District police chief ACP Shamsudin Mat said the curfew is only imposed the local waters around the district, about three nautical miles from land.

“Residents here should remain calm and not to panic as the curfew is confined to the waters around Lahad Datu only. They can conduct their daily activities as usual,” he explained.

Shamsudin said this when met at the launching of Ops Selamat for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri at Simpang Tamoi, along Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan on Monday.

The two-week curfew, effective until August 2, is enforced three nautical miles off the coast stretching 362 nautical miles from Tanjung Pundaras in Sandakan to part of Pulau Sebatik in Tawau.

In view of the upcoming Hari Raya celebration, Shamsudin reminded the public to drive carefully and to secure their homes before going away for the Hari Raya celebration.

“Residents, who are leaving their homes unattended during the Hari Raya holidays can fill in the ‘Balik Kampung’ information form to alert the police of their absence.

“By completing out this form, we can arrange to make regular patrols to the area to prevent any crime activities,” he said, adding that the public should also fortify their home security system.

Shamsudin cautioned those going back to their respective villages during Hari Raya to take more self-precaution and be civic minded when driving on the roads to avoid any mishaps.
