KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities are taking various measures to ensure an accident-free drive home during the Aidilfitri holidays beginning this weekend.

The stretch of the East Coast Expressway between the Jabor and Cheneh interchanges is being opened from yesterday to facilitate travel. Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said the opening of the 26-km stretch of highway was expected to reduce traffic congestion on roads in the east coast of the peninsula.

He said in a statement that the government was committed to expediting the completion of several other stretches of the expressway, from Cheneh to Chukai and onwards to Paka.

“The government is confident these stretches can be opened in stages by the end of September,” he said.

Fadillah said the 184-km East Coast Expressway was a high-impact infrastructure project under the 10th Malaysia Plan contributing to the socio-economic development of the people towards achieving the developed nation status in 2020.

The expressway was opened on Aug 22, 2011, and up to Jan 25, 2014, the government had opened stretches for up to 104 kilometres, he added. — Bernama
