KAPIT: Ops Selamat for Hari Raya Aidilfitri wil focus on three areas — road safety, river safety and preventing burglaries.

Kapit OCPD DSP Peter Umbuas said the police would jointly conduct the operation with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Kapit Resident’s Office, Social Security Organisation (Socso), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).

“We hope the road users would drive safely and express boat or longboat passengers would have a safe balik kampung journey,” he said during the launching of Ops Selamat 2014 Hari Raya Aidilfitri for Kapit yesterday.

“Also we advise those who are leaving their houses not to leave the houses unattended to invite break-ins. Inform the police so that the necessary patrols can be arranged,” he advised.

Peter also stressed the importance of wearing motorcycle helmets and to fasten seatbelts in vehicles.

“I’ve observed in Kapit, motorists don’t like to wear helmets or fasten seatbelts on the road. When accidents happen, it would be too late to realise the importance of helmets or seatbelts.

“My advice is as responsible Malaysians, we should show our respect for rules and regulations,” he added.

Twenty Socso helmets were presented to motorcyclists, while 30 reusable bags filled with safety pamphlets from the police were distributed to passenger van drivers as part of the campaign.
