MIRI: A local voluntary service, Hii King Chiong Service Centre, will continue to bridge the link between the people in Miri and the state government, with its latest project in community policing on bicycles.

The centre founded by Datuk Hii King Chiong, a local businessman, is assisted by Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Suzanne Lee, councilors Keith Chin, Sim Poh Giat and Bruce Chai and two former councillors Lawrence Kong and Khoo Ek Chong.

Keith Chin said the service centre has been open since 2012, operating with the theme of “Forward Miri”.

“Being a voluntary service centre, the centre has rendered community service starting with Lutong villages before moving into Taman Yakin, Krokop area.

“In effort to consolidate the centre, it has been moved to a new premises at Lot 1314, First Floor, Waterfront Commercial Centre early this year,” he stated in a press conference at the centre recently.

The key services of the centre are to highlight the people’s welfare matters, community issues, assist in late birth registration and identity card application as well as submitting welfare cases to the Welfare Department.

Following security and safety cases here, Chin said the centre plans to conduct community policing and patrolling.

“We have received a lot of complaints on security and safety concerns from the people in residential areas in Senadin, Permyjaya, Tudan and Lutong.

“Thus, we are going to conduct community policing and work closely with police and other voluntary corps. For this project, we are going to supply bicycles and allowances for the volunteers.”

Apart from that, they are currently in progress to set up another new similar centre in Senadin/Permyjaya area, expected to be ready for operation after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“We hope we can attract more volunteers to join this voluntary centre and help in what we have been doing in the past two years.”
