TAWAU: A Form Two student has claimed that he felt dizzy and vomited after being slapped 12 times by a teacher who wrongly accused him of playing with firecrackers in the school here on July 18.

The 15-year-old student, Yap, said the teacher tugged at his pants before slapping him.

As he felt dizzy and nauseous, he called his father who came and asked for some medicine for his son before taking him to the hospital here.

His father then took him to lodge a police report and file a complaint to Parti Gerakan Complaints Bureau chief James Leong.

“I was wrongly accused of playing with firecrackers in the school when in fact it was my friend who was playing with the firecrackers.

“All the while, I was watching from a distance but I was repeatedly slapped in the face by the teacher,” Yap claimed.

Commenting on the incident, James said that even if the student was in the wrong, teachers should be more careful in meting out the type of punishment or penalty as extreme physical punishment such as this could result in the death of the student.

“Teachers should always keep their tempers in check to avoid creating a negative perception of the teaching profession,” he said.

James said it was noted that the student (Yap) was not sent to the hospital immediately after the incident despite having apparently complained of dizziness and nausea.

He said he would be paying a visit to the Tawau Education Department to raise the matter for it to be investigated and for disciplinary action to be taken.
