KUCHING: This year’s Sarawak Inter-Division Volleyball Championship in Sibu from July 26-28 will see a bumper crop of eight men’s teams.

The tournament, organised by the Sarawak Volleyball Association (Sava) and hosted by Sibu Division Volleyball Association, is aimed at selecting the state players for the national championship in Shah Alam, Selangor from August 20-24.

Last year, Sarawak’s women’s team emerged as champions while the men’s team finished fourth.

Sava head coach Moh Wung Ming said the response to this year’s men’s competition in the state championship was overwhelming, with Bintulu also sending a team.

“We are pleased to see the big number of men’s teams and we would like to thank all divisional affiliates for their support in sending teams to the championship. This will enable us to select and groom more potential players to compete and secure better results in the national championship,” he added.

The men’s competition is divided into two groups, with defending champions Sibu A, Kuching, Miri and Limbang in Group A while Group B comprises last year’s runners-up Mukah, Meradong, Bintulu and Sibu B.

The women’s section will only feature a demonstration match played by selected players.
