Not having driving licence, road tax top traffic offence list

MELAKA: Not having driving licence and road tax are the most common road transport offences committed by motorists, said Road Transport Department (RTD) deputy director-general (Planning and Operations) Datuk Yusoff Ayob.

He said out the 460,000 summonses issued by RTD last year, more than 80 per cent were related to the two offences.

“Those committing such offences were aged between their 20s and 40s,” he told reporters after monitoring RTD enforcement operation held in conjunction with Aidilfitri here yesterday.

He said the problems arose from the indifference attitude of road users towards road safety.

So far, only 20 per cent of driving licence holders had opted to synchronise the renewal date of driving licence with their date of birth as a method to remember driving licence expiry date.

Elaborating on the operation, Yusoff said 716 vehicles were inspected and 123 summonses were issued for various offences.

He said the operation also caught 57 offenders for not have driving licence and 13 were without road tax.

“Other offences included unapproved number plates, not having side mirrors, tinted glasses and not having vehicle insurance coverage,” he said.

In conjunction with the festive season, he advised all motorists to be cautious when driving back home. — Bernama
