KUCHING: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) announced that Bentara field in the Balai Cluster Risk Service Contract (RSC) area located offshore Sarawak, has achieved its first oil production on May 25, 2014.

The field which is expected to produce more than 1,000 barrels of oil per day is being developed and operated by BC Petroleum Sdn Bhd. The Bentara field is the second field in the Balai Cluster, which successfully achieved oil production after Balai field on 6 November 2013.

“The first oil production from Bentara field also marks the fourth successful oil production from marginal field development projects undertaken by Petronas under the RSC petroleum arrangement,” it said in a statement yesterday.

The Balai Cluster RSC covers four fields namely Balai, Bentara, Spaoh and West Acis.

The RSC was awarded on 16 August 2011 to BC Petroleum Sdn Bhd, a joint venture company consisting of Roc Oil, Dialog Group and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

Other recent developments by Petronas offshore Sarawak include expanding the terms of the 2011 Baram Delta (BDO) production sharing contract (PSC) between Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and Shell Malaysia earlier this month for enhanced oil recovery projects (EOR) offshore Sarawak (2011 Baram Delta EOR PSC) to include gas rights.

With the signing of the Heads of Agreement (HOA) for Baram Delta Gas Gathering Project 2 (BARDEGG2), associated and non-associated gas rights linked with the Baram Delta Operations will be incorporated into the 2011 Baram Delta EOR PSC.

The Tukau Timur field, previously part of the SK307 PSC, will also be integrated into the 2011 Baram Delta EOR PSC enabling non-associated gas to be developed as part of a single integrated development project.

With the expansion of the 2011 Baram Delta EOR PSC, Shell and Petronas Carigali would gain access to gas rights not previously included under the 2011 Baram Delta EOR PSC.
