Rela contributes much to society — State director

BINTULU: People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) has become one of core units tasked to preserve the country’s security alongside other relevant agencies.

Its state director Rini Tupong said since 2013, after Rela was upgraded as a department, it had contributed significantly to the development of the community.

“Rela is the third force in the country tasked to maintain peace and order in the country after the army and the police,” he said during the breaking of fast here on Tuesday.

As the youngest department in the country, he said Rela still need to learn and be guided by other senior departments to be effective.

It has 229,735 registered members in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, at the function several members were presented with a certificate each after completing their shooting proficiency test.

Some corporate bodies such as Maybank and Bank Islam also contributed goodies and duit raya to the members’ children and also the less fortunate individuals.

According to Rini, they have carried out 63 activities during the Ramadan throughout the state this year.

Bintulu deputy police chief DSP Mohd Said Ibrahim and Bintulu Rela officer Abdul Rashid Ibrahim were among those present at the function.
