Two villagers killed in squabble over Engkabang

BETONG: Two villagers were killed in a fight over an Engkabang tree at Sungai Lubok Labi, about 100 metres away from Rumah Kalong Raba, Penyelanih in Ulu Layar on Tuesday morning.

A 50-year-old man was said to have slashed 60-year-old Ajang Lega in the neck, causing him to die on-the-spot. The suspected assailant allegedly used a machette to inflict injury.

Then he turned on husband-and-wife Jangkau Unol, 48, and Layek Lega, 50, attacking the couple with the same machette.

Reportedly in self-defence, Jangkau counter-attacked the alleged assailant resulting in his death.

Jangkau also suffered injuries on his back and right arm while his wife Layek was wounded on the back, arm and leg as well as a broken finger. These injured victims were sent to Betong Hospital for treatment.

The remains of Ajang and that of the suspected assailant were sent to the same hospital for post-mortem. It was claimed that the fight started when the suspected assailant was unhappy that one of the alleged victims had chopped down an Engkabang tree which belonged to him.

Betong police yesterday confirmed the case and said they are probing it further.
