GLASGOW: Following is today’s news-in-brief on the 20th Commonwealth Games here.

CYCLING :

National track cycling ace, Mohd Azizulhasni Awang failed to make it to the semifinals of the men’s individual sprint.

In the quarter-finals at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome here Friday, the 26-year-old who needed to win at least two races against New Zealander Sam Webster, however, was only able to win one.

Mohd Azizulhasni fell behind in the first but rose up to win the second.

Webster was able to make a spirited race to finish ahead of the Malaysian in the third.

TABLE-TENNIS :

The Malaysian women’s team secured their third win in the group stage when the overcome Jamaica 3-0.

In the competition at the Scotstoun Sports Campus, Ho Ying beat Shenique Clare 14-12, 11-7 and 11-5 to give Malaysia the first point followed by Lee Rou You defeating Yvonne Foster in 6-11, 11-6, 11-6 and 11-7.

Beh Lee Wei and Rou You then went on to defeat Shenique Clare and Dadrian Lewis 11-4, 11-5 and 11-7 for Malaysia’s third point.

The victory put them at the top of Group 6, thus qualifying for the next round tomorrow.

Prior to this, the quartet of Ng Sock Khim, Ho Ying, Rou You and Beh Lee Wei had helped Malaysia defeat Papua New Guinea 3-0 and Canada 3-2.

SWIMMING :

Independent swimmer, Chui Lai Kwan improved on her personal best and set a new national record in the heats of the women’s 50m freestyle at the Tollcross swimming complex near here.

She did 26.00 seconds which qualified her for the semifinals.

However, in the semifinals later in the afternoon, she could only manage a time of 26.10 seconds. — BERNAMA
