KUCHING: The Kuching Division Volleyball Association are looking to better their performance in this year’s Sarawak Inter-Division Volleyball Championship in Sibu starting today and ending next Monday.

Team coach Chai Poh Fatt is
feeling optimistic of the team’s chances in the state championship. Chai, also the team referee and player, said Kuching are drawn with defending champions Sibu A, Miri and Limbang in Group A.

Group B comprises last year’s runners-up Mukah, Meradong, Bintulu and Sibu B.

“It will be an uphill task to beat Sibu A team but we are hoping to defeat Miri and Limbang to reach our semi-finals target,” he said.

However, he said Kuching will not be taking Miri and Limbang lightly in the preliminary rounds.

Chai is hopeful of his team making the last four as there are three state youth players Law Yew Thean, Roger Wee Han Siang and Watson Ting Hua Jeun in the Kuching line-up.

“With the blend of youth and experienced senior players, I am confident we can give other teams a good fight,” said Chai who added that he is expecting the competition to be as keen and tough as in last year’s championship.

Looking at last year’s results, Chai feels that the teams to beat in this year’s championship will be Sibu A and Mukah.

Other members of the Kuching team are Chai King Sing who is also the team manager, Chai Poh Fatt, Chai Wee Ming (captain) Steven Liew Guo Chen, Allan Chan Chun How, Chiew Soon Nguong, Delon Sim Chiew Hou, Calvin Kuang Li Wei and Huang Yew Sein.

The competition organised by the Sarawak Volleyball Association (Sava) and hosted by Sibu Division Volleyball Association is aimed at selecting the best players to represent Sarawak in the national championship in Shah Alam, Selangor from August 20-24.
