GLASGOW: Malaysia’s Datuk Nicol Ann David booked her berth in the squash quarterfinals of the 20th Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The 30-year-old world number one defeated New Zealand’s Megan Craig in straight set of 11-7, 11-6 and 11-5 in 26 minutes at Scotstoun Squash Centre, here in the second round today.

“It is my first time playing against Megan, she got some good results recently and she played quite solid in the beginning.

“In the first game, it was good to get a feel of how she played and then I got my bearings a bit better on the court as well. As the match went on, I was pleased with my game and hopefully will step it up in the next match tomorrow,” said Nicol when met by Bernama.

Nicol added that she’s looking forward to tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

“…of course I am going to prepare myself for the quarterfinal match and will bring in my ‘A’ game tomorrow,” she said.

Nicol will be playing against England’s Jenny Duncalf, who defeated Canada’s Sam Cornett in straights set of 11-4, 11 -5 and 11-7 in booking her quarterfinal berth.

In the men’s singles, Mohd Nafiizwan Mohd Adnan was shown the exit by world number 10, Peter Barker of England in straight sets.

Mohd Nafiizwan lost to Peter in 7-11, 6-11 and 3-11.

“I have done my very best but he is more consistent. I’m looking foward to the mixed doubles after this,” he said.

Malaysia’s number two women’s squash player, Low Wee Wern and Delia Arnold and men’s singles Ivan Yuen will be playing later today in the quest to book their berths in the last eight. — BERNAMA
