KOTA KINABALU: Police detained three individuals for driving when under the influence of alcohol on Friday night.

The three were detained during an operation against drunk driving at Jalan Lintas near Hilltop here, district police chief Supt M Chandra said.

Chandra added that 12 road users were asked to take a breatherlyser test after they were suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and the three suspects failed it when their alcohol reading was higher than the allowed limit.

They will be charged under Section 45 A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he said, adding that during the operation the police also issued five summonses for various traffic offences.

He also disclosed that the Traffic police would be conducting its ‘Ops Cegah Kemalangan’ (accident prevention operation) in areas in the city which have been identified as ‘hot spots’.

As part of the operation, Traffic police would be patrolling these ‘hot spots’ round-the-clock, Chandra said adding that the objective of the operation was to reduce accidents in the city during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
