Warning issued to sports associations

KUCHING: Sarawak State Sports Commissioner Lamat Nyalau is worried that some sports associations in the state are not up to their mark.

According to him, key responsibilities for these associations include convening an Annual General Meeting (AGM) and submitting an annual report to the Sarawak State Sports Commission.

He has raised concern that so far only 170 have submitted their annual reports for the year 2014 out of the 350 sports associations whom the office have requested.

“Most of the sports association here in Sarawak were told to hold their meetings and submit their reports before the month of March this year. I see this as a serious matter which I need to address,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

While an association may wish to postpone their AGM to a date after March 2014, they have to inform the commission office at least 30 days before the proposed date of the AGM.

“Those who wish to postpone their AGMs must also give a valid reason.

“The Sarawak State Sports Commission office sees this (postponement) as a serious matter,” Lamat added.

He stated that all sports associations in the state have been briefed on the matter.

He reminded them that failure to comply with the requirement can result in their association being penalised under the Section 20 (1) of the Sports Development Act, 1997.
