Killer stretch at T-junction of Jln Airport-Jln Suhaili

The 4WD which turned turtle when avoiding a head-on collision yesterday – and the driver ended up in hospital.

KAPIT: Motorists approaching the T-junction between Jalan Airport and Jalan Suhaili near the Tai San Ten funeral parlour here have been urged to exercise extreme caution and slow down at this accident-prone stretch.

It’s a killer stretch because if a motorist driving from Kapit town to Jalan Suhaili must be mindful of the oncoming traffic from the steep slope. And those from Bukit Goram, Bletih or Jalan Airport residential estates to town have to negotiate a very sharp corner and steep descending slope. Likewise, if a motorist from Kapit bazaar drives to Jalan Airport, there is a very steep ascending slope before the sharp corner.

Mishaps are frequent when approaching the T-junction because losing control when negotiating the sharp corner on descent will mean a head-on collision with vehicles from Jalan Suhaili turning right or left. And then too, the road design ‘invites’ accidents because of the narrow steep slope.

Yesterday morning around 6:30am, a four-wheel-drive on its way to town while descending had to suddenly avoid a vehicle turning right into Jalan Airport. The driver tried to avoid the head-on collision, but the 4WD turned turtle.

The woman driver survived but was hospitalised for observation. People nearby had to smash the windscreen to get her out of the car and rush her to hospital.

Since Jalan Airport is the busiest road connecting Kapit bazaar, it is imperative for Kapit Road Safety Council to improve the situation.
