MIRI: United People’s Party (UPP) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh says that the formation of the party is to accommodate young leaders and give them the chance to lead in the state’s politics.

Speaking at a press conference at a local hotel here yesterday, Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister and Bawang Assan assemblyman, assured that UPP would adopt a different approach from his former party SUPP which he said was dominated by the ‘old guards’.

“For such an established party like SUPP, it is sad to see that it has been dominated by the old guards and in some of the branches, young professionals were shut out from any possible opportunity.

“In UPP we will include all the age groups especially the youth to lead the party to a better future,” he said.

On his visit here, Wong said the trip was not only to meet those who had been sacked by SUPP but also those who were being sidelined in the party.

“UPP is a new beginning, we hope through this party we can rally support from the urban community, particularly the Chinese community. Our focus is on the multiracial community, but with emphasis on urban community which is similar to SUPP.

“UPP is the party that will fight for justice, equality and for the interest of Sarawakians,” he stressed.

Asked on the number of people who will be joining the party, Wong chose to remain mum as the details will only be revealed during the party’s official launching which is scheduled to take place in Kuching on August 16.

Earlier, Wong handed out grants of RM20,000 each to Federation of Chinese Association Miri Division and The United Association of Chinese Primary Aided School board of management Miri-Limbang Division and RM10,000 each to Federation of Chinese Association Limbang Division and Limbang Chinese Calligraphy and Cultural Arts Club.
