GLASGOW: Following is a list of news in brief involving Malaysian athletes at the 20th Commonwealth Games here, today.

 

HOCKEY:

The National women’s hockey team collected its first point after a scoreless draw against Wales in a Group B match.

The squad coached by Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim had lost 0-4 to Australia, 0-2 to Scotland and 0-5 to England.

Mohd Nasihin admitted that it would not be easy to compete against some of the best teams in the world although his charges had shown an improved performance when compared with the New Delhi edition in India, four years ago.

“What we need is goals. We are still waiting for the first goal that will certainly boost the confidence of the players,” he said.

 

 

WEIGHTLIFTING:

Malaysian weightlifter Nurjannah Batrisyah Abdullah could only manage seventh position in the women’s 74kg category with a total weight of 225kg after lifting 100kg in the (snatch) and 125kg (clean and jerk).

In the event held at the Clyde Auditorium, Maryam Usman from Nigeria clinched the gold medal with a total weight of 280kg while Ele Opeloge from Samoa took the silver on 271kg and Tracey Lambrechs from New Zealand walked away with the bronze medal with a total weight of 237kg.

 

BOXING:

Muhammad Fuad Mohd Redzuan lost his quarterfinal bout against Ashley Williams from Wales 0-3 in the 46kg-49kg Light Flyweight category at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre Precint, here today.

Though the score read as 0-3, the bout was a closely contested affair with Fuad narrowly losing the first two rounds 28-29 and the third 27-30.

 

 

DIVING:

It was a bad day in office for National divers after finishing without any medals in the 3m Springboard Synchronized diving at the Royal Commonwealth swimming complex.

Cheong Jun Hoong/Loh Zhiayi collected 283.44 points to finish in fifth position while Ng Yan Yee/Nur Dhabitah Sabri finished last in the list with 282.69 points.

 

SQUASH:

Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David and her partner Low Wee Wern marched into the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles competition after managing two victories and a loss.

In the quarterfinals, Nicol-Wee Wern will meet Tesni Evan/Deon Saffry from Wales.

In today’s Group D matches, Nicol-Wee Wern lost to Joshna Chinappa/Dipika Pallikal of India 8-11, 5-11 but defeated Mihilya Methsarani/Nadindhi Udangawa from Sri Lanka 11-2, 11-2 to earn their berth.

Yesterday, the duo beat Megan Craig/Kylie Lindsay from New Zealand 7-11, 11-10, 11-6. — BERNAMA
