Celebration turns to tragedy as road accidents kill two

SIBU: The third day of Syawal turned tragic as a man and a woman were killed in two separate road accidents yesterday.

The first accident, involving a car and a lorry, occurred around 9am at Mile 27 Sibu-Stapang road.

Noorsurina Zainuddin, 27, from Kampung Tellian in Mukah, died on-the-spot when the car driven by her elder brother Mohd Akbar Zainuddin, 29, collided head-on with a lorry coming from the opposite direction.

The siblings were returning to Kampung Pa Dris here after celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in their hometown.

Firefighters had to extricate Noorsurina and Mohd Akbar from their seats.

Mohd Akbar was seriously injured, while the lorry driver in his 50s escaped unhurt.

The second fatal accident happened around noon at Ding Lik Kwong Road.

Cyclist Syafiee Abdullah, who was in his 60s, died on the spot after he was knocked down by a lorry, which also dragged him for a distance.

He was cycling back to his home in Kampung Baru from Sungai Bidut, where he worked as a security guard at a sawmill, when the accident occurred.
