Warriors’ Day as platform to instil patriotism

KUALA LUMPUR: Warriors’ Day to honour security frontliners in their role as defenders of the country’s security and sovereignty, is also a platform to instil patriotism and love for the country particularly among the youth.

Malaysian Ex-Army Association secretary-general Lt Col Tajul Ariffn Chu Johari (RTD), said through commemorating the country’s heroes, the young generation would learn, for instance, how they had fought the communists and died or are incapacitated for life in defence of the nation.

“In conjunction with Warriors’ Day this year, the association will launch a Warriors’ Fund to collect donations from the public and government-linked and private companies,” he told
Bernama, when contacted yesterday.

Proceeds from the fund, to be officially launched on Sept 7, would be used to assist the family or widow of ex servicemen, as in previous years.

He said the association collected about RM4 million last year.

Meanwhile in Kota Kinabalu, former Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said the people could express their loyalty to the nation by avoiding any involvement with subversive elements that want to undermine public order and security.

“The national security forces have made a lot of sacrifices to safeguard the country particularly during the emergency and communist insurgency. They defended Sabah and Sarawak, in every corner of the nation, and many of them perished.

“As Malaysians, we should remember their sacrifices because without them, we would not have achieved peace,” he told Bernama, in conjunction with Warriors’ Day, commemorated on July 31 annually. — Bernama
