GUANGZHOU: Authorities in south China’s Guangdong province said 12 tonnes of yoghurt candies that tested positive for melamine had not been sold to customers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Police seized 12.05 tonnes of candies and 13.5 tonnes of semi-finished sweets in February.

An official at Guangdong Food and Drug Administration said a local based company which produced the candies had used tainted creamers purchased illegally.

The products were sold to Shenyang city in northeast China and were seized later.

The discovery prompted a nationwide crackdown in 12 provinces.

Guangdong police said five suspects including the company manager and creamer
supplier had been arrested.

Chinese dairy firm Sanlu Group was found to have sold products mixed with melamine in one of the country’s biggest food scandals.

Melamine was central to the 2008 tainted milk formula scandal that killed six babies and made 30,000 ill in China.-Bernama
