SARIKEI: Residents of Nunggang, about 13km from Pakan, have claimed that their water woes since June have not received due attention from the authorities.

According to them, the acute shortage of clean water supply was highlighted to the Welfare Department on July 3, but they have yet to receive any response.

Resident Chuseng Malin is said to have claimed that some 100 families from 10 longhouses in the area depended on the river as their main source of water supply and that it had almost dried up due to the prolonged dry spell.

Democratic Action Party (DAP) Pakan secretary Rinda Alexander related the problems in Nunggang during a press conference yesterday.

“I sympathise with these people but regret that no relevant agency has come forward to help them.

“When the relevant authorities in other districts such as Saratok can do a lot to help those affected by the water crisis, there is no reason why the local agencies cannot take similar action. In Saratok, the authorities distribute bottled drinking water as well as treated water to the affected residents,” she said.

Rinda visited the residents yesterday and gave them 360 1.5-litre bottles of drinking water and promised to refer their plight to the relevant authorities.
