KUCHING: Dayak non-governmental organisations (NGOs) play an important role in elevating the socio-economic status of the community.

Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) vice-president I Anthony Banyan said as such Dayak NGOs would continue to ensure that the community does not lag behind in terms of economic, employment and education opportunities.

“These three areas are very important if we are to be on par with other races so that we can progress together with other communities and the nation,” he said during the Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Samarahan first anniversary dinner on Friday.

“There is a lot to be done and we will continue the legacy of what our previous Dayak leaders in these Dayak NGOs had done so that we can get recognition and continue to make headway in this multiracial society.”

He said the formation of SDNU and SIDS was unique and a platform for the Dayak community to progress.

“A lot has been done since SDNU was formed 59 years ago on May 28, 1955, and SIDS 58 years ago (May 10 ,1956) and it was not only about showcasing our culture and social status but eradicating hardship and poverty.

“Thus education is a must for our young Dayaks and for them to take every opportunity to be in the job market or else we will still struggle,” he said.

Anthony said Dayak NGOs are working with the Public Service Department, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Defence, Royal Malaysia Police and other government agencies to find jobs for young Dayaks.

“Our NGOs must work hard all the time and ensure that we continue to do so by doing roadshows and reaching out to the young people in the rural areas by all means (necessary) so that we can make a lot of difference,” he added.

He pointed out that the close relationship with the Dayak community in Kalimantan Barat, especially in cultural ties, could also strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and Indonesia.

He also urged all SDNU and SIDS branches to recruit more members.
