KENINGAU: The district council has set up a special committee to monitor business premises that do not fly the Jalur Gemilang so that stern action could be taken against them.

Organising committee chairman of the ‘Merdeka’ Month program and the ‘Fly Jalur Gemilang’ campaign, Haji Yusop Haji Osman, reminded business premises here to fly the Jalur Gemilang during the Merdeka month.

“Business premises not flying the Jalur Gemilang during the Merdeka month will be ordered to close for a week,” he said, adding that such action was necessary so that everyone can celebrate and enjoy our Merdeka Day with great patriotism.

Assistant Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Haji Sairin Karno, who launched the two events at the town field yesterday, reminded the younger generation to always make it a point to remember our past leaders in their struggle for our country’s independence.

For without them, he said the sovereignty of this country may not exist today, and their sacrifices should imbue a spirit of patriotism in us to continue to defend our independence and the peace that we enjoy today.

“To show our love for the country and its leaders, we should fly our Malaysian flag, the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of peace which we are pioneering today,”he said.

Sairin hoped that during the Merdeka month, the people here will put up Jalur Gemilang in remembrance of the struggle of past leaders that led to independence and the formation of a sovereign nation, Malaysia.

“I hope the younger generation will fully appreciate the true meaning of independence and always appreciate what has been achieved by the country today,” he said.

Sairin called on every home, including public buildings in the villages, to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang during this month-long program.

More than 2,000 people, including veteran politicians, historian, government officers and the local community attended the event at the town field.
