BALIK PULAU: Police believe the statement given by a woman arrested to facilitate investigation on the nude sport festival alleged to have taken place at Teluk Kampi beach in the Penang National Park here recently will provide a new lead.

Barat Daya police chief Supt Lai Fah Hin said the 34-year-old woman, who is a music teacher in Penang, was picked up at her house in Bayan Lepas on Thursday night and was released on police bail yesterday.

“Police have recorded the statement from the woman and we believed her statement will provide a new lead in the investigation. We are also satisfied with her statement.

“I cannot comment further on this because the case is still being investigated,” he told Bernama when contacted here yesterday.

The festival became a hot topic of discussions when a five-minute video clip entitled ‘Nude Festival In Teluk Bahang, Penang’, showing a group of men and women body painting, dancing and doing sport activities in the nude at the beach, went viral on social websites.

When asked whether the unmarried woman would be charged, Lai said it would depend on the investigation, which was being done under Section 294(a) of the Penal Code for doing obscene act in a public place, an offence punishable with imprisonment for up to three months or with fine or both, if found guilty.

Those involved could also be charged under Section 509 of the same law for making gestures intended to insult the modesty of other person, he added. — Bernama
