Kem Astro badminton tryout in Sibu this Saturday

SIBU: Kem Badminton Astro is calling budding shuttlers aged 10 to 12 to join the tryout training session on Aug 16 at Thumb’s Up Badminton Academy here.

Some of the outstanding participants selected from the tryouts.

Registration for shortlisted participants start at 7pm, followed by the tryout from 8am to 12.30pm.

The nation-wide Kem Badminton Astro tryouts kicked off on May 17 in Penang followed by the second in Johor and third in Terengganu in June and the most recent in Sabah last Saturday.

Over 1000 children took part in these tryouts conducted by a team of professional coaches headed by former World No.1 badminton player Wong Choong Hann and assisted by three former national players Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng.

Kem Badminton Astro, organised by Astro Kasih is a collaboration between Astro, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth & Sports, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the Li Yongbo Badminton School to provide structured training and development activities to cultivate budding talents from beginner to world class level and create greater interest and participation among the younger generation.

A total of 60 participants will be selected from the tryout sessions to undergo a one-week intensive training.

Upon completion of this intensive training in Kuala Lumpur, 30 outstanding participants will have the chance to experience a two-week Intensive Advanced Training in the prestigious Li Yongbo Badminton School in Dongguan, China later in the year.

The academy is named after Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national badminton team, and led by principal Tang Xianhu, the renowned badminton coach behind great Chinese players such as Lin Dan.

It serves as a national team training base reputed to have one of the best training programmes in the world.
