MIRI: The Department of Environment (DOE) has slapped nine companies with compounds of RM2,000 each under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 for open burning in Kuala Baram from July 1 to Aug 12.

DOE Miri chief Mohamad Fitri said the department is also investigating one company and a developer for further court action.

Thirty individuals and companies have also been issued warning letters for deliberately setting fires
on idle and private land for roadside gardening along the Kuala Baram road.

“DOE wishes to remind companies or developers to adhere to the open burning ban now as the dry hot weather conditions will continue until September,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said six companies were also directed to take control of fires spreading on their private land.
