Fish farmers’ loss due to murky river

AMUNTAI, South Kalimantan: Farmers of cage fish farming in North Hulu Sungai (HSU) suffer losses every year due to fish deaths as a result of changing conditions of Balangan turbid river, Antaranews reported.

One of the cage farmers in the village of Tangga Ulin Hulu, Ghazali Rahman, in Amuntai on Friday said the river water is often discolored (murky) resulting in high mortality rate of the caged tilapia fish.

The murky river water, Ghazali said, could have been the result of erosion upstream due to frequent cutting of trees and lack of reafforestation.
