Request to declare Friday a holiday for Muslims

LAHAD DATU: Work and time constraints have prevented many Muslims from performing their religious obligations like attending Friday prayers and for this reason they are requesting the state government to consider declaring Friday a holiday like some states in Peninsular Malaysia.

Vice chairman of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (PERKIM), Abdul Hakim Ghulam Hassan, called on the state government to consider the matter in order to facilitate Muslims to perform their Friday prayers.

Abdul Hakim, who is also Tungku USIA chief, said in view of the considerable number of Muslims in the state, this proposal would help the Muslims perform their religious obligations without any constraints, despite time being granted to allow them to do so.

“I have received feedback from Muslims and most of them agree that they tend to face difficulties performing Friday prayers due to work exigencies, time constraints and also other conditions such as traffic congestion.

“I hope, therefore, for the state government to consider this matter,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
