MIRI: State Karate Goshin-ryu Association are collaborating with Sarawak Karate and Sarawak Sports Council to organise the Sarawak Inter-school Karate Championship from Oct 25-26 here.

Over 250 primary and secondary school students statewide are expected to take part in the two-day tournament.

“This championship is indeed very important as it will help us to identify new talent to be groomed before the next Sukma which will be hosted by Sarawak. We are looking forward to choose young talented Karate athletes in the junior category (16 and 17 years old) and also senior category (18 and 19 years old),” head coach Al-Harir Muhammad said here yesterday.

The championship will have a special focus on Kumite to address the lack of athletes in the event.

“We will emphasise more on Kumite in the 76kg, 83kg and 83kg and above categories for males and 61kg, 67kg and 67kg and above categories for females,” Al-Harir added.

Apart from that, a seminar for local coaches will also be held.

The seminar will incorporate theory based on the latest World Karate Federation (WKF) rules and practice as conducted by a national kumite representative.
