Man jailed, caned for robbing and hurting boy

LAHAD DATU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 36-year-old man to five years’ imprisonment and ordered him to be whipped twice for robbing and hurting a 15-year-old boy.

Kota Kinabalu High Court deputy registrar Amir Shah Amir Hassan, who sat as Sessions Court judge, passed the sentence on Ramlee Halmain after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Josepine AK Seliman told the court that about 3pm on August 6, the accused had asked to borrow a phone from the victim in front of Milimewa Supermarket here but he refused.

The accused later took away the victim’s mobile phone and his wallet, forcing the latter to lodge a police report on the same day.

About an hour later, the accused was arrested with the help of the public and police seized a wallet as well as an identification card belonging to the victim.

Further investigation found that during the incident, the accused had slapped the victim’s head before taking his mobile phone and wallet.

The accused was ordered to serve his sentence from the date of arrest.
