NANJING: Two Malaysian shuttlers suffered contrasting fortune at the Group stages of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) badminton competition yesterday.

National junior Cheam June Wei moved into the quarterfinals of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) after securing his third consecutive win in Group C after beating Turkey’s Muhammed Ali Kurt 21-14, 21-6 but Lee Ying Ying’s hopes were dashed by Bing Jiao He, China world number one junior player.

June Wei, 17, the sixth seed in the competition said he would have to double his efforts to make it to the semifinals and win a medal.

“I am happy with the result today but the road to the final is still a long way. I will continue to work hard,” he told Bernama.

Ying Ying lost to Jiao He 18-21, 14-21 in a Group H match and failed to advance to the women’s singles quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, June Wei would also be playing in the mixed doubles competition partnering Hong Kong’s Tsz Yau Ng in a Group C match. — Bernama
