Three men arrested over shooting at Soon Koh’s house

SIBU: The police arrested three suspects, including a partially-paralysed man and his son yesterday to help in the probe into the shooting at the house of Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh last Wednesday night.

The arrests were made shortly after midnight when a team led by deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo and senior investigation officer ACP Yeoh Chun Shyan arrived at the suspects’ house in Rejang Park at 12.05am.

Seized from the 57-year-old partially-paralysed man was a shotgun.

The police said 10 pellets had been fired from the gun and that a spent cartridge was found in the compound.

Koo confirmed the arrest but would not comment further, saying they were in the midst of the probe, and did not want to jeopardise the investigation.

The partially-paralysed man has been remanded for four days while his 29-year-old son and another man, 26 were remanded for six days.

It was learnt the son was involved in an extortion case with a former gangster and a few others previously. They were freed from the charge and the case is now pending an appeal from the prosecution.

The police sprang into action early yesterday morning after receiving a public tip-off.

In the incident which was discovered on Thursday morning by Wong’s family members, they found that a shot had been fired at their house in Ipoh Road.

The minister’s wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, son Datuk Andrew Wong and his wife Datin Lily Loh and a few others were at home at the time of the shooting.

Leong said she heard of an explosion while talking on the phone with her daughter in Sydney at 8.30pm Wednesday.

None in the family were hurt.

Andrew said he found shattered glasses on the floor in an upstairs-room.

The glass panel window of the room and another glass window panel at the stairs were damaged.

The police found shotgun pellets and a empty cartridge at the house compound.

The cartridge contained over 70 pellets.

In the court yesterday, reporters who were taking photographs of the three suspects as they were being led out after their remand application received threats from the detainees.

The detainees were unhappy reporters were taking their pictures, threatening to harm them (reporters).
