Two soldiers killed as armoured vehicle overturns

SANDAKAN: Two army personnel died while four others were injured when the Adnan armoured personnel carrier (APC) they were in overturned at Sungai Tiram Road off Mile 19 here yesterday.

Deputy police chief Superintendent Fadzil Mohd Ali said the APC with six army personnel and another APC were on their way from Kampung Sungai Tiram to Sri Kinabatangan Army Camp of the Royal Malay Regiment at Mile 7 when the incident happened around 11.15am.

Upon reaching Mile 19, Sungai Tiram Road, the vehicle lost control before overturning. Two army personnel identified as crew chief Mohd Hanif Bin Patahur, 31, and Ahmad Fileni Bin Mansor, 23, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver, Mohd Faizal Bin Ahmad, 28, Mohd Amaruddin Bin Che Soh, 29, Mohd Haffez Bin Khairudin, 23, and Ifaiznor Bin Ismail, 22, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the Duchess of Kent Hospital.

Fadzil said the two APCs were on security patrol in Teluk Labuk earlier.

The soldiers involved had been on duty at the Sri Kinabatangan Camp since July 15 after being posted there from Kuantan, he said.

He added that the bodies of the two victims would be sent back to their hometowns today.

Hanif was from Johor while Ahmad Fikri from Kelantan.

Fadzil said the case would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

This was the second incident involving an APC in the country this year. The first accident happened on July 4 at Kilometer 232.6 on the North-South Highway heading south in Kuala Kangsar, killing an army sergeant and a corporal  while two other army personnel were injured.
