KOTA BAHARU: The Election Commission (EC) will set the date for the Pengkalan Kubor state seat by-election after it has been officially notified on the seat’s vacancy from the state assembly speaker.
Kelantan EC director, Mohamad Mahmud said it would hold a special meeting on the matter after receiving the official letter.
“We shall wait for the official notification from the Kelantan state assembly speaker (Abdullah Ya’kub).
“The by-election should be held within 60 days after the seat is vacant,” he said when contacted, here, yesterday.
Pengkalan Kubor incumbent assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar, 57, passed away due to liver cancer at a hospital in Guangzhou, China, yesterday.
The late Noor Zahidi, who was also Tumpat Umno division chief and had been Pengkalan Kubor assemblyman for three terms, died at 5.45am.
In the 13th general election last year, he won the seat for Barisan Nasional when he defeated Saharun Ibrahim from PKR and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary with a 1,736-vote majority. — Bernama
