SARIKEI: An elderly woman who was said to have attended an appointment and collected her medicine at Sibu Hospital last Friday died in Sarikei Hospital the same night, due to another reason.

Paramedics and firemen attend to the injured elderly woman, who later succumbed to her injuries.

She was said to have succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident while on her way back home to Saratok.

The elderly woman and another female passenger had proceeded to Sibu in a car driven by her granddaughter in the morning and after collecting her medicine, the trio set on their journey back in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, their car somehow collided with an oncoming four-wheel drive (4WD) in Sungai Paoh area about 16 kilometres from here around 5pm, the car driver said.

The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to end up in the drain, badly damaged.

The driver and two passengers in the car and an elderly male passenger, one of the five in the 4WD, were injured and sent in an ambulance to Sarikei Hospital for treatment, but unfortunately the sick elderly woman succumbed to her injuries.

According to the 4WD driver, they were on their way from Kuching to send his wife to her workplace in Sibu.

The injured elderly man is his father-in-law, he added.

Although the slippery road due to heavy downpour was partly to blame, traffic police are still investigating the actual cause of the accident which had been classified as fatal, following the death of the elderly woman.

The local Fire and Rescue (Bomba) Station sent a team of firemen to the scene.

However, when they arrived at the scene all the injured victims had been taken out of the vehicles by passers-by, they said.
