Hawkers give statement on shooting case

SIBU: More than 10 hawkers have been called to the police station to have their statements recorded since Tuesday to assist investigation into the shooting at the house of Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

Sibu deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo confirmed this when contacted yesterday.

Police expect to record statements from more hawkers as they continue to probe the case.

On Wednesday, Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong accompanied a woman hawker to have her statement recorded at 4pm.

“Members of the public should give full support to the police so they can solve the case,” he urged, adding that the police had already detained three suspects.

Though hawkers felt it was unfair for them to come to the police station to give their statements, Yap advised them to cooperate as the police were very concerned about the case.

He believed the hawkers did not do the shooting as they were working to earn income to support their families.

A shot was fired from a shotgun at Wong’s house at Ipoh Road at 8.30pm on Aug 13.

Wong’s wife Pauline Leong, their son Andrew and other family members were at home when the incident happened.

Andrew was recently elected deputy chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
