Most mosques hold funeral prayers

KUALA LUMPUR: Most mosques throughout the country yesterday held funeral prayers for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 tragedy.

In Putrajaya, Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, accompanied by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, joined about 5,000 Muslims in performing the funeral prayers in the absence of the dead after the Friday prayers.

After performing the funeral prayers, Tuanku Abdul Halim joined the others for the ‘tahlil’ session led by the Grand Imam of the National Mosque, Tan Sri Syaikh Ismail Muhammad.

In Johor, about 200 Muslims held the funeral prayers at Masjid At-Taqwa, Taman Pelangi,
Johor Baharu, after the Friday prayers.

Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, in a statement, called on all mosques to hold funeral prayers in the absence of the dead simultaneously with the funeral prayers for the victims of the MH17 crash before the remains were laid to rest after arriving from Amsterdam, Holland.

Earlier, the special Malaysia Airlines aircraft that brought the remains of the 20 Malaysian victims of the crash, landed at the KL International Airport (KLIA), Sepang at 9.54am.

The aircraft had taken off from the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam at 9.40pm Thursday night for the 12-hour flight to Kuala Lumpur, carrying the first batch of the remains of the victims in 17 coffins and three urns bearing the ashes of three victims. — Bernama
