Muhyiddin satisfied with smooth flow of burial ceremonies

MUAR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Seri Muhyiddin Yassin said he was satisfied with the smooth flow of the funeral for MH17 victim Mohd Ali Md Salim, 30, who was from Pagoh, Johor, yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also member of parliament for Pagoh, also said he was satisfied with the smooth flow of the burial ceremonies and last rites for other MH17 victims in various parts of the
country.

“Thanks to Allah, the burial ceremony for Mohd Ali has been completed and I also received information that those of the other victims also went well with good weather all round. Although it was very sad, I could see that their (victims’) families were strong and accepted this as a test,” he said.

Muhyiddin said this to reporters after attending Mohd Ali’s funeral at the Kampung Raja Muslim Burial Ground here which was attended by thousands of local residents.

Earlier, Muhyiddin had joined the thousands of locals in performing the funeral prayers for Mohd Ali at the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara mosque in Pagoh and also offered prayers at Mohd Ali’s home in Kampung Jayor, here yesterday.

Mohd Ali, was a doctorate student at Erasmus Universitiet in the Netherlands and was on his way home to Malaysia to celebrate Aidilfitri when the tragedy happened.

According to Muhyiddin, although all Malaysians were sad, the tragedy showed the unity of the people in times of grief.

Commenting on the remains of the other Malaysian victims in Amsterdam, he said some would be brought back tomorrow and hoped their names could be announced soon.

He said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai would leave for the Netherlands and the number and list of names would be revealed to the families of the victims.

“We hope the remainder (of the remains) that have been found and identified can be brought back home. The schedule has been fixed for Aug 24 and we hope the list of names can be announced soon,” Muhyiddin said.

He added that victims of the second batch would be given the same honours as those yesterday. — Bernama
