NANJING: Unlike other international sports meets, there is no official medal tally to measure the performance of the contingents taking part at the 2nd edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) here.

Malaysia’s chef-de-mission to YOG 2014, Wong Pei Tty said the organisers were not providing a medal tally chart for the countries but instead were only updating on the medals won by athletes according to the events.

“According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), YOG is not about results and performance, more about experience, learning and getting to know your future path,” she told Bernama here today.

Wong said as for her, the gold medal won by national shuttler Cheam June Wei in the international mixed doubles event today still counted as the first gold medal for Malaysia.

“For me, this is the first medal for Malaysia although in the mixed team, Cheam still had to fight in the court to win this gold medal …This is his achievement,” she said.

The victory by Cheam raised questions among the Malaysian media because t he national anthem and flag raising ceremony did not take place during the presentation of medals to the winners.

Cheam who paired up with Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong defeated the pair of Tsuneyama Kanta (Japan)/Lee Chia Hsin (Taiwan) in straight sets of 21-14 and 23-21 in the final. — BERNAMA
