KUCHING: Sarawak Amateur Radio Emergency Service (Sares) recently signed up 70 new members during their exhibition held in conjunction with the Sheda Property Expo 2014 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

In a press statement, Sares said the new members included a few lawyers and other professionals who were interested in amateur radios and assisting the local agencies in their communications, in line with the organisation’s objective “to save lives through airwaves”.

Sares president Capt Zainuddin Hamdan said the exhibition was the first promotion effort by the organisation to engage more youths to join Sares, not just to assist in emergency communications but also to carry social integration locally and also internationally to enhance more amateur radio operators worldwide.

Sares currently has about 150 members.

The organisation is also collaborating with the state Civil Defence Department and any other search and rescue agencies in assisting and supporting communications where ever required.

Members of Sares consist of radio experts who have vast experience in VHF and HF radios, various types of antennas and have technical experts in this field.

Sares team can be deployed to any remote location where Sares can put up their base station in an hour and operate on batteries to send out critical reports to operation base station.
