KUCHING: The reformed Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMK) is promising a new era for the development of the sport in the state.

The previous association was deregistered in November last year.

The new PMS president Jumaat Ibrahim said he is relieved that the body is now revived after being heart-broken last year.

“I guess it was big news to all muaythai enthusiasts in the state to hear that PMS being de-registered last year. As enthusiasts of the muaythai sport in Sarawak, we do not want to see this happening to our state association,” he added.

He promised that the association will now do everything they can to continue and improve the standard of muaythai in Sarawak.

He also wanted to put on record his appreciation to Sarawak State Comissioner (SSC) Lamat Nyalau for helping them with the re-registration.

In the interim period, all duties were temporary handled by the Kuching Muaythai Association (PMK).

Lamat explained that the old PMS was deregistered as it had too many irregularities in its operations and failed to comply with the rules and regulation set by the SSC Office.

“During the time, they did not submit any annual report, did not hold any meeting despite being reminded via letter over and over again. I hence had no choice but deregister the association,” he said.

Meanwhile, the TYT Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Cup Muaythai Tournament, held last Friday at the Stadium Perpaduan, was the ‘new’ association’s first assignment.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib were present to officiate at the prize-giving ceremony.

Also present were City North Comission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and Assistant Minister of Industrial Estate Development Datuk Peter Nansian.

A simple ceremony was also held to mark the ‘re-birth’ of PMS with Taib invited to put his signature on a platform prepared by the organisers.
