TAWAU: A machete-wielding man believed to be of unsound mind, was shot dead by police after he attacked them near an oil palm estate at Kampung Andrassy on Monday.

The man shot dead by police yesterday.

The incident happened about 11am when police responded to information that a man had run amok at the village and attacked a policeman who was injured on the right shoulder.

The police tried to persuade the man but he attacked them using the machete.

This forced the police to shoot at the assailant, whose identity had yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, the 53-year-old injured policeman, Corporal Eldi, told reporters at the Tawau hospital that he had received a call about an amok in the area.

He and the complainant then went to investigate.

“While I was carrying out investigation, a man in his 30s, suddenly came out and attacked me with a machete.

“I did not have enough time to take out my pistol to defend myself,” said Eldi who then called for backup.
