This was announced here yesterday by Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, after he chaired the organising committee meeting.

Among those present were Assistant Minister for Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman and Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development) Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais.

Awang Tengah said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his cabinet ministers as well as state cabinet ministers from Sarawak and Sabah will be joining in the celebration.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will officiate at the function centred at the Miri City Fan.

The celebration will start at 7pm with various activities including performances reflecting the formation of Malaysia so as to enhance the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians.

“We expect as many people as possible to come, not just the older generations … because this is
our celebration for the country.

“Symbolic performances will be held after the speeches at 8pm, and there will also be fireworks and merry making as we should be proud of what we have achieved,” said Awang Tengah.

He said the celebration will be broadcast and telecast live. Among the artistes performing are Sarawak-born Malaysian ‘rhythm-and-soul’ queen Dayang Nurfaizah, Jaclyn Victor, Bob AF, Adila and Nicole.
