MIRI: There have been no bush fires here since Aug 13.

Fire and Rescue Department Zone 6 head Senior Supt 1 Law Poh Kiong said heavy rain helped to put out existing fires and prevent new ones from igniting.

“The situation in the city is back to normal now. There are no more bush fires around including in the hotspots in Kuala Baram, Senadin and Mount Mulu in Mulu National Park,” he confirmed yesterday.

However, he said the department continued to be on standby for other disasters such as flash floods and landslides due to the rainy conditions.

“Therefore, we are always prepared — 24 hours, seven days a week — for these two possibilities,” he said.

Law explained that firefighters had checked all boats to ensure the engines are in working condition, as well as prepared personal protection equipment such as life jackets.

“We are all ready at every moment,” he said.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out at a room of a quadruplex at Lorong 5, Bandar Baru Permyjaya on Monday.

Law said the quick action of neighbours and the public helped stop the fire from spreading.

No one was injured but the room was quite badly burned.

Law thanked all those who helped in one way or another in the incident, which occurred around 6.13pm.
