SIBU: Five records were re-written on the first day of the Sibu Division Inter-School Swimming Championship at Bukit Lima Swimming Pool here.

Alex Tiong on his way to his record breaking swim in the 200m Individual Medley.

State swimmer Alex Tiong Siew Hung stamped his superiority when he clocked 2:17.61sec in the Boy’s A 200m Individual Medley to better his own record of 2:18.84 set last year.

But the time was far from his personal best of 2:13.45 achieved at the last Sukma in Pahang.

Immediately after the event, the 18-year-old Form Six student of SMK Sacred Heart had to rush back to the school.

“I have missed a lot of lessons in the past year and there is lot of catching up to do,” said the bespectacled Alex.

Alex is down to compete in two more events – the 100m and 200m backstroke – and can be expected to break two more records in those events. Nee Gui Ping also smashed his own Boy’s B 100m butterfly record of 1:00.64 set last year with a new time of 1:00.34.

The SMK Chung Hua swimmer was virtually competing against himself as he left other swimmers far behind.

Two other students from SMK Chung Hua, twin brothers Ngu Jiung Wei and Jiung Jing, also shared the limelight.

Jiung Wei re-wrote the Boy’s A 100m freestyle record with a new time of 55.79sec to erase the old time of 57.75sec set by Alex in 2013.

Jiung Jing broke the Boy’s A 100m butterfly record with a time of 1:02.88. The old record of 1:03.68 was set by Lau Tai Hong in 2011.

The fifth record of the day came courtesy of Cindy Sui in the Girl’s A 100m freestyle.

State swimmer Cindy clocked 1:07.18 to beat the 9-year-old record of 1:10.55 established by Ling Wei Sing in 2005.
